In 1979 he was awarded a Certificate in Choral Conducting from the Royal School of Church Music in England and, in 1980, earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Maryland. In 1977, he was appointed Director of Music and Organist at St. Dominic Church in northeast Baltimore City, a position he still holds. In 1996, he was engaged as Choirmaster and Instructor in Music at Archbishop Curley High School and, in 2002, was appointed Chairman of the Fine Arts Department at Curley. He is the founder/director of the one hundred and twenty-member Archbishop Curley High School Choir and oversees a choral music program that includes five performing ensembles. During Mr. Gaffney’s tenure, the Curley Choir has performed in numerous prestigious venues throughout Maryland and in the eastern United States and has been a featured performer with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at the Meyerhof Symphony Hall. Mr. Gaffney is a frequently-heard organ recitalist and a regular speaker on the topics of choral and liturgical music and organ performance.
