Curley AP Environmental Science students visited to the Chesapeake Bay Today, the students had a fantastic hands-on learning experience focused on environmental conservation and marine ecology. During the trip, students learned about platinum-rated, environmentally friendly building design and its importance in sustainable development. They also delved into the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay, examining key indicators of aquatic health. They were able to hop on canoes and head into deeper areas of the creek, where they conducted various water quality tests, including measuring pH, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, phosphorus, and nitrate levels. In addition, students had the opportunity to explore local marine life by using hand nets and drag nets to catch different types of fish. They were able to study these fish up close, along with some crabs, eels, and oysters. The students learned about the important roles these species play in maintaining the health and balance of the marine ecosystem. It was a wonderful day filled with valuable, experiential learning, and the students came away with a deeper understanding of the environmental issues affecting the Chesapeake Bay and its marine life.
